The family of suspected murder victim Susan Goodwin has issued a statement thanking those involved in the investigation and search for her remains.
It followed a breakthrough in the cold case on Wednesday, when human remains, believed to be those of Ms Goodwin, were found buried in the backyard of a Port Lincoln home.
Following the discovery, a 64-year-old man was charged with her alleged murder.
“Your efforts over the past few days have finally brought us the answers we’ve been looking for after such a long time,” the family said in the statement issued via SA Police.Â
“We’d also like to give a heartfelt thank you to the people who have been on this journey with us over the years, both in friendship and through investigations — your ongoing support, care and pursuit of the truth have meant more than these few words can say.
“You’ve helped carry us through some of the hardest moments and we are incredibly grateful for that.”

The family also asked for privacy as they process the news.
“Now begins a very personal journey for us as we try to come to terms with what’s happened; laying Sue to rest once this is over so that she can be at peace with family that has gone before her and finding some sense of peace and acceptance within ourselves,” they said in the statement.
“As you can imagine this is a very emotional and difficult time.
“We’re dealing with a lot and we ask for privacy and space so that we can look after our mental health and support each other.”
Ms Goodwin, 39, was reported missing on Friday, July 19, 2002, after she was last seen shopping in supermarkets in Port Lincoln around lunchtime that day.
The man accused of her murder is expected to appear in Port Lincoln Magistrates Court later today.
