1Password has announced a partnership with Perplexity to provide credential management and secure access controls for Comet, an AI-powered web browser.

The Comet browser has been developed to change how users interact with information online by leveraging AI technology. Through the partnership, users can install the 1Password browser extension to log in, utilise autofill for credentials, and access their accounts securely while browsing with Comet.

This collaboration marks 1Password as the first security launch partner for Perplexity’s Comet browser. The 1Password browser extension is available to Comet users at no additional cost for existing customers. It supports features such as privacy-first browsing, secure autofill of usernames and passwords, including two-factor authentication codes, and data encryption. Additionally, users can generate and save strong, unique passwords and passkeys, and synchronise their credentials across multiple devices and operating systems.

“The internet is entering a new chapter, one where AI is woven into everything we do. No matter how intelligent our tools become, they only succeed if people can trust them,” said Anand Srinivas, Vice President of Product and AI at 1Password. “Partnering with Perplexity on Comet shows what’s possible when AI and security are designed to work together from the start: an online experience that’s powerful, seamless, and safer for everyone.”

Emphasis on privacy and user experience

1Password has stated that its principles of secure-by-default innovation are guiding its technical and partnership efforts. According to the statement, the collaboration with Perplexity seeks to address both productivity and security requirements as AI usage expands across the internet.

According to Perplexity, Comet stores browsing data locally on a user’s device, while 1Password provides an extra layer of end-to-end encryption.

“Comet is designed to make AI-powered browsing effortless and productive, but that experience only works if security is also built in from the start,” said Dmitry Shevelenko, Chief Business Officer at Perplexity. “1Password stands apart in making security simple, combining privacy, transparency, and usability in a way that delivers both trust and a seamless user experience. Together, we’re bringing an internet experience that is effortless, productive, and secure by default.”

Availability and early access

Current 1Password customers will be offered early access to the Comet browser via email notifications. The browser extension is set to provide wider access to credentials management for Comet users as the browser gains traction. As of July 2025, the Comet browser is only available for Perplexity Max customers. Rollout will be expanded at a future date. Perplexity Free users can join the waitlist as Comet will be gradually released to reservations by invitation.

1Password describes its mission as enabling productive and secure access across digital platforms. The company states that its Extended Access Management technology is intended to protect sign-in processes across cloud applications and devices, responding to changing cybersecurity requirements as AI agents and unmanaged devices become more prevalent.
