A northern Tasmanian man has been charged after police say they found about $1 million in cash in a cardboard box in his vehicle on Saturday night.

Tasmania Police said officers were conducting a random breath test in Triabunna on the state’s east coast about 8:30pm when they found the cash.

The driver, a 57-year-old man from the Launceston suburb of Mayfield, was arrested and later charged with dealing with property suspected of being the proceeds of crime.

“Police will allege the cash is profits from the sale of illicit drugs in Tasmania,” police said in a statement.

“This incident highlights the critical role frontline officers play in disrupting criminal networks and protecting the Tasmanian community.”
