New iPhone move cements the growth of eSIMs
Data shows young Australians quickly adopting eSIMs

The physical SIM card for our mobile phones is slowly being phased out, with Apple’s latest iPhone model using eSIMs exclusively. But for some phone users, a SIM card is still their preference, particularly when they are travelling internationally.

Research by Australian travel SIM provider SimCorner conducted in August 2025 showed 93% of respondents were aware of eSIMS, a 12% increase compared to research conducted in April 2024.

But the preference to use a physical SIM card when travelling overseas shows a clear generational gap, with just 21% of 18-26 years old exclusively using a SIM card, compared to 56% for over 65’s. The use of just an eSIM is clearly preferred by 18-26 years old, with 55% preferring this, with the remainder using both. This compares to just 23% of over 65’s using an eSIM exclusively when travelling overseas.

Shehbaz Shaikh, CEO and Co-Founder of SimCorner, said: “The SIM card is facing an existential threat. We’ve seen clear growth in Australians making the switch to using eSIMs in the past year. The convenience to use an eSIM when travelling for so many customers wins out. But the preference for older travellers is to have a physical SIM card. The option to make local calls is much preferred by older SimCorner customers.

“We see internationally the continued march towards eSIM use, but like all new technologies the adoption is likely to be fragmented, with more tech savvy customers jumping much sooner. There is also an education piece required on how to use the eSIM, unlike physical sim cards where you can pop it in and out, there is much less flexibility with eSIMs. It is likely the SIM card will be around for several years more, but as people continue to update their phones, we expect more and more people will make the switch to eSIMS.”

What’s an eSIM?
An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM card that’s built into your device, eliminating the need for a physical SIM card. It allows you to connect to a mobile network without having to insert a plastic SIM card – all you need to do is download the SimCorner App and choose your eSIM product from there. eSIMs are great for those who want to easily switch between carriers or have multiple phone numbers on one device. You’ll be able to receive texts on your regular number, while roaming on the best plan for your travels.

Mr. Shaikh added: “Some global markets, including the US have offered eSIM only iPhones for several years now. Australians will be used to the experience of using a small special pin to remove their SIM cards, this will be a thing of the past with an eSIM. For travellers, eSIMs provide great value and simplicity to stay connected, helping avoid dreaded international roaming charges.

“When my brother and I founded SimCorner 13 years ago, we set out to make overseas travel easier by taking the stress out of mobile connectivity. Today, we’re proud to keep Aussies connected in over 200 destinations with instant activation, reliable coverage, and competitive pricing.”

Research Methodology: Conducted in August 2025, the survey polled 4,000 SimCorner customers about destinations, trip length, companions, and connectivity habits.
