Brandel Chamblee hasn’t been able to fire off takes from the Golf Channel “Live From” desk since the Open Championship ay Royal Portrush, which ended on July 20, two months ago. In other words, he’s had plenty of time between then and this week’s Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black to craft some opinions.

“Live From” is back in full force this week on Long Island and so is Chamblee, who opened the week’s first show with an absolute scorcher. The topic of discussion was Bryson DeChambeau, who European stalwart Rory McIlroy took aim at in a recent interview with The Guardian, saying the only way DeChambeau gets attention is by “mentioning other people”.

Golf Channel’s Todd Lewis caught up with DeChambeau on Monday (New York time) and asked if he had any response to McIlroy’s recent comments.

“All I’m trying to do is inspire kids on YouTube,” DeChambeau said. “We’ve amassed quite a big audience on YouTube, and I’m continuing to focus on that train of thought and whatever Rory says and what not is great. He didn’t mean anything by it. I’m excited, I hope we can have some good banter back and forth and if not and he wants to do what he’s doing, great, no problem. Crowd’s going to be on our side, we’re going to have a fun time.

“Ultimately, my job is to get a kid out there to look at me hitting a golf ball, smiling,” DeChambeau added. “That’s the goal.”

After kicking it back to the “Live From” desk, Rich Lerner inbounded Chamblee the ball and got the hell out of the way:

“Bryson plays most of his golf on a tour where he mostly could be in the witness protection program,” Chamblee said. “Nobody watches, he doesn’t get any attention. So, when he does come out, there’s a bit of a circus-barker element to it to drum up some interest for himself.”

Chamblee, in particular, didn’t seem to care for the fact that in DeChambeau’s answer to Lewis, there was no mention of the goal being to win this week’s Ryder Cup.

“He didn’t talk about playing on a team and how much that meant,” he said. “What he did do was talk about his YouTube channel, which, if we want to talk about the numbers that are generated from that, it’s pretty dubious. I have no doubt that bots are generating a lot of those views. There may be some interest as well, but that’s what he wants to talk about? Not the team, not the Ryder Cup.

“It’s one of the reasons why I think he’s going to be such a difficult person to get paired with. No doubt he’s one hell of a golfer, no doubt he has his moments and generosity with fans, I’ve heard about it. But he’s an odd duck when he’s trying to blend in with the team. And he has so many potential bulletin-board mistakes, and I think he would be a captain’s nightmare.”

Boy, that escalated quickly.

Paul McGinley’s face afterwards said it all. A “How am I supposed to follow that?” face if we’ve ever seen one:

And it’s still only Monday in America, folks.
