Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Joseph Woll has taken a leave of absence, the team announced Tuesday.

The Leafs said in a statement that the American netminder is stepping away from the team to “attend to a personal family matter.” The length of the leave is unclear.

“No additional details will be provided at this time, and we ask that his privacy be respected,” the Leafs said.

Woll started Game 2 in the second round of the Leafs playoff run against the reigning champion Florida Panthers, after starter Anthony Stolarz took an elbow to the head from centre Sam Bennett and suffered a concussion in Game 1.

The 27-year-old was in the crease for the following five games, and recorded a shutout in Game 6. The Leafs were eventually ousted 6-1 in Game 7, despite Woll stopping 28 shots.

Woll played 42 games last season.

The Leafs start their 2025-2026 season on home ice on Oct. 8 against the Montreal Canadiens.
