Former India all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin is set to join the Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League in Australia, which is set to begin in December. The 39-year-old recently retired from the Indian Premier League (IPL), and as he is no longer part of the national set-up, he can compete in domestic leagues abroad.
According to Fox Sports, Ashwin has committed to the BBL franchise. Ashwin was contacted by Cricket Australia chief executive Todd Greenberg to convince him to join the popular Australian T20 competition, Fox Sports reported.
Ahead of the BBL, Ashwin will feature in the ILT20 in the UAE. Ashwin has entered the auction to be held in Dubai on October 1, with the highest base price of $1,20,000. Ashwin had an eventful IPL career, representing five franchises over the years, including Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals. He has not played in a domestic league outside India.
Ashwin’s BBL stint will begin after the ILT20. Though he did not register for this year’s BBL overseas draft, he is expected to be granted an exemption by Cricket Australia.
Ashwin retired as India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket with 537 scalps, behind Anil Kumble (619). The off-spinner took 187 wickets from 221 IPL matches, and also scored 833 runs.
