It has been a big month for our local footballers, there’s been plenty happening and now the AFL grand final is right around the corner.
This is the time of year where we celebrate the achievements they have had this season – and Will Boston has taken a look at what’s been going on.
In the local SANFL grand finals, Glenelg made it through to both the A Grade and the Reserves.
In the Reserves’ big dance, former South Gambier player Jake Walker featured in the premiership winning side as they defeated Sturt 87-62.
Walker contributed well in the match, recording 17 disposals, three marks, three tackles and three clearances.
Meanwhile, in the A Grade grand final, former local player Matt Allen was in the side for the Bays but sadly they could not replicate the success the B grade had as they fell to Sturt 105-74.
Allen finished the game with 18 disposals, one goal, five marks, four tackles and two clearances.
Turning our attention to the AFL, the Brownlow was held on Monday night with several local players in attendance for the prestigious award.
Essendon rookie Angus Clarke – from Tantanoola – made his first appearance at the night after being nominated for the rising star award after his standout round 11 performance.
Fellow Bomber and local Mason Redman polled two votes on the night, his first Brownlow votes since 2023.
The Kid from Kyby Lachie Neale still had a solid night for the Lions, despite missing some time at the end of the season. Neale finished the night with 16 votes and ended up second overall for the Lions.
Adelaide Crows captain Jordan Dawson did not have as big a night as most expected, finishing fourth overall with 27 votes.
Coming off a Coleman medal season, Geelong’s Jeremy Cameron polled quite well, receiving 20 votes which was the second highest for the club, only behind Bailey Smith.
At the end of the night it was Gold Coast’s Matt Rowell who came away with the medal, polling 39 votes.
This Saturday we are in store for a big AFL grand final clash as the Geelong Cats take on the Brisbane Lions for the first time in the GF.
There will be plenty of attention of several Limestone Coast bred players, as Geelong will have Brad Close and Jeremy Cameron, while Lachie Neale’s availability is still up in the air for the Lions as he missed their preliminary final clash against the Pies due to a calf injury.
These sides have met three times this season with the Lions winning twice in the home and away season while the Cats got the better of them in the qualifying final, winning by 38.
Cameron has performed well against the Lions this season, kicking a combined seven goals against them in 2025.
Neale has had some mixed results against the Cats this season as he has not quite been able to dominate them in the home and away season, having 17 and 20 disposal games against them. However in the qualifying final Neale was slightly better, having 32 disposals.
It should be a competitive clash on Saturday with the Cats the favourites to win.
