In a significant development for the Lower North Shore’s sporting landscape, the $81 million Galuwa Recreation Centre is nearing completion, promising to deliver a state-of-the-art facility that seamlessly integrates a modern multi-sport complex with the venerable Lane Cove Golf Course. The project, formerly known as the Lane Cove Sport and Recreation Centre, was officially named ‘Galuwa,’ a powerful Sydney Aboriginal language word meaning “to climb.” This name, chosen with guidance from the Aboriginal Heritage Office, encapsulates the project’s dual purpose: to be a place for physical activity and to inspire personal growth, cultural connection, and community strength. While the centre’s name and features are broadly inclusive, the investment in its golf amenities is a clear signal that the sport remains a vital component of the precinct’s identity and future.

A New Pro Shop and Player Amenities

At the heart of the golf-related upgrades is a brand-new, purpose-built pro shop and golf amenities area. This dedicated space is designed to cater directly to the needs of golfers, providing a modern, welcoming environment that contrasts with the former clubhouse. This new facility will not only serve as a hub for the Lane Cove Golf Club but will also offer a superior experience for casual players. The integration of this new pro shop into the main recreation centre building creates a cohesive precinct, allowing golfers and non-golfers alike to share a common space, fostering a more inclusive and dynamic community atmosphere. The new bistro and dining areas, with their indoor and outdoor seating, will offer golfers a modern place to relax and socialise after a round, a significant upgrade from the previous clubhouse amenities.

Lane Cove Council and project builders, ADCO Constructions, have worked to keep the course fully operational with a modified 9-hole layout. The project’s timeline, which began with preliminary works and excavation in early 2024, has been carefully managed to accommodate the ongoing needs of the golf course. Reports from early 2024 detailed the completion of sewer works and the successful re-shaping of the 7th hole, demonstrating a phased approach that prioritised the golf course infrastructure as part of the initial works.

More Than a Club: A Community Hub

The Galuwa Recreation Centre is a prime example of a modern, multi-use sports facility designed to be financially sustainable while serving a diverse community. While the project includes eight multi-sport courts, four multi-purpose rooms, and extensive parking, the symbiotic relationship with the golf course is what makes it unique. The centre will provide the only public indoor courts in the Lane Cove LGA, servicing a population of over 40,000, but its location, nestled alongside the fairways and surrounded by beautiful bushland, maintains the natural and tranquil feel of the golf course.

The design, by AJC Architects, was crafted to be sensitive to the surrounding environment, with a focus on minimising tree removal and preserving the landscape. This commitment to sustainability, which reportedly added approximately $10 million to the total project budget, reflects a broader trend in sports infrastructure development towards environmentally conscious design.



A Phased Timeline to a Grand Opening

The project has followed a meticulously planned timeline. Construction commenced in mid-2023, with the bulk of the structural work taking place throughout 2024. This included the completion of a large rainwater tank and the installation of structural steel for the main buildings. The project is expected to be completed in late 2025, culminating in the opening of the new pro shop and amenities, and the full integration of the golf course into the broader centre’s operations.
