The Ottawa Senators have acquired forward Kurtis MacDermid from the New Jersey Devils in exchange for forward Zack MacEwen, it was announced Friday evening.

MacDermid, 31, had zero points and 23 penalty minutes in 23 games last season for New Jersey while averaging 5:47 of ice time per game. He has played in 288 NHL games in his career.

He has registered 11 goals, 20 assists and 391 penalty minutes in his 288-game NHL career spread out over eight seasons. Undrafted, he made his debut with the Los Angeles Kings during the 2017-18 campaign. He joined the Colorado Avalanche at the start of the 2021-22 season before ending up in New Jersey in March of 2024.

MacDermid is heading into the second year of a three-year, $3.45 million deal that carries a cap hit of $1.15 million. He is scheduled to hit free agency after the 2026-27 season.

The 6-foot-5 left-shot defenceman was also a member of the Stanley Cup winning Avalanche roster in 2021-22, but did not appear for the team in the playoffs.

MacEwen, 29, split last season between Ottawa and Belleville in the AHL. In 21 NHL games in 2024-25, he scored two goals and added one assist with 21 penalty minutes. In 23 AHL games, he tallied seven goals and nine assists with 29 penalty minutes.

He is heading into the final season of a three-year, $2.33 million contract that carries a $775,000 cap hit.
