Oscar Piastri has been left furious at his teammate, and his team, after his two drivers’ championship rivals gained ground on him in the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix.

George Russell converted pole position into his second win of the season, beating Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and McLaren’s Lando Norris.

Piastri finished fourth, behind his championship rivals Norris and Verstappen, but was outraged after he was hit by Norris on the first lap.

Norris, starting fifth, had a great launch and was able to pass Piastri for third on the third corner of the opening lap. Norris made contact with the rear of Verstappen’s Red Bull, and then took evasive action and went into the side of Piastri. The Australian came close to driving into the wall after the hit, and appealed to his team to make it right.

But after the stewards cleared the contact as a racing incident, McLaren decided they would not order Norris to give Piastri the place back.,

Piastri gave Norris second place in Italy after the Brit suffered a slow stop, and the Australian believed that fairness should be offered to him.

But McLaren told Piastri they would not do anything about it, telling the Australian that his teammate was avoiding a collision with Verstappen.

“That’s not fair, I’m sorry. That’s not fair,” Piastri said.

“If he has to avoid another car by crashing into his teammate, then that’s a pretty s*** job at avoiding.”

Piastri’s hopes fighting back and snatching a podium effectively ended with McLaren suffering a slow pit stop, something that has plagued the team in recent times.

The left rear tyre was slow to come off Piastri’s McLaren, leaving him stationary for three seconds longer than his teammate, who pitted the lap prior.

Piastri entered the race with a 25-point lead over Norris and a 69-point advantage over Verstappen.

Those margins have narrowed to 22 points to Norris and 63 points to Verstappen.

McLaren CEO calls Norris-Piastri incident ‘hard racing’

McLaren CEO Zak Brown is speaking to Sky Sports F1, after his team secured the constructors’ championship.

But there is a lot of talk about the contact between his two drivers on the first lap.

Brown has no issue with it, and described it as “hard racing”.

“Like all race weekends, you review everything. First corner, it looks like Max and Lando either touched or had to check-up, and so it was clearly an exciting turn [three] incident,” Brown said.

“Racing. Tough racing. But when you have three or four cars all stacked up, that’s going to happen every once in a while.

“We’ll look at it all in more depth on Monday, but clearly, just hard racing.”

19m agoSun 5 Oct 2025 at 2:25pmOscar Piastri’s thoughts after the Singapore Grand Prix

Oscar Piastri has spoken to Sky Sports F1.

He was asked about the turn one contact between him and teammate Lando Norris.

Piastri appears to have calmed down, a bit.

“Obviously, a difficult race. A difficult first lap,” Piastri said.

“I’ve not seen the replay, just know from in-car, so I’ll go have a look.

“I don’t think there was any intention of contact, but there was. Again, I need to look at the replay and see exactly what happened.”

The Australian crashed out of the previous race, and now lost a few more points to his title rivals.

He was asked how he regroups for the final six races of the season.

“Just take the learnings from this weekend and see what can be improved. The weekend as a whole was generally pretty good. Practice went well, qualifying went well. The race — maybe a little bit slow to get going.”

The Brit said there was nothing in either moment.

“[Lap 1] It was slippery, so wet in lots of places. It is racing, I put it on the inside, had a little correction and yeah, that’s it.”

Max Verstappen says second was a ‘maximum result’

Max Verstappen defended magnificently to secure second place in Singapore.

Red Bull put soft tyres on Verstappen’s car to start the race, but it was not enough for the Dutchman to take the lead.

“The track only just got dry, so we opted to try something different. It didn’t work out,” Verstappen said.

“The whole race was quite difficult for a few different reasons so we need to understand what went wrong today.

“For us, second was the maximum result.”

If Hamilton is handed a five-second penalty, he will be demoted to eighth.
