Press Conference

On the opening day of the 2025 Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period, Geelong’s General Manger of Football Andrew Mackie spoke to media ahead of a busy two weeks for the Cats

Andrew Mackie Speaks to Media

Mackie on whether the Cats will chase Clayton Oliver

No we won’t.

We were lucky enough to get James Worpel in as a free agent a couple of days ago, so from an inside midfielder point of view, that is the way we see James and that is probably how we viewed Clayton Oliver this time last year.

We have got some high end talent and run on the outside, we have just got to make sure we have got enough depth around the stoppages and inside of our midfield.

We were able to do that through James, so it probably means we are less likely with Clayton.

Mackie on the initial discussion around Rowan Marshall

Oh he is contracted, he has a got a couple of years so I am not surprised at that answer.

We will see how we go over the next 10 days, see if we can get a deal done. We get it, we get the situation we are in.

I spoke to SOS [Stephen Silvagni] on Saturday as an initial discussion, but we didn’t get that far.

It was okay, he understood that there is some interest and why that might be. We didn’t strike a deal.

Mackie on a potential trade for Charlie Curnow

It will be hard work. Speaking openly, there is a lot to do with the collateral we have. If we want to do that, we have got to get busy.

Like I said, there is a bit to work through with that and it is a balance. No players have come and said they want to leave, so that is a positive.

We will thrash out exactly what it looks like and at the end of the day, the Charlie [Curnow] one is going to be hard to do.

It is challenging, but he is a gun player so it is not something we are willing to put a line through on day one of the trade period.

Mackie on the potential timeline

It is hard to put a timeline on it.

Conversations today, we will gather all that information and we will work through which way we are going to go.

Rowan [Marshall] wants to come to the club, so the intention is to bring him in.

The Charlie one is a bit more complex, but it is all tied in together and we understand that.
