Polanco came up clutch against one of MLB’s best pitchers on Sunday night.

SEATTLE — Jorge Polanco did something on Sunday night that only three other Mariners hitters have ever done in a playoff game.

With his two home runs off Detroit Tigers star Tarik Skubal in Game 2 of the American League Division Series (ALDS), Polanco joined Ken Griffey Jr., Edgar Martinez and Jay Buhner as the only four players to hit multiple home runs in a postseason game.

Polanco first turned on a slider from Skubal to break a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning, hitting it 392 feet into the bullpen in T-Mobile Park’s left-center field.

In his next at-bat, Polanco again drove one over the fence off Skubal to extend the lead to 2-0 Mariners.

After Game 1 saw the rest of the Mariners go hitless besides stars Cal Raleigh and Julio Rodriguez, the script was flipped with Polanco. Raleigh and Rodriguez were 0-6 with three strikeouts while Polanco was 2-for-3 with two home runs.

Skubal, who won the AL Cy Young in 2024 as the top pitcher in the league, was in control early in the game. Polanco became the first player in over four years with a multi-home run effort against Skubal, with Paul Goldschmidt being the last to do so back in August 2021.

The rest of the Mariners have struggled to find success Sunday night, but Polanco has the team in position to potentially even the series against the Tigers.

Game 3 of the ALDS is set for Tuesday afternoon at Detroit’s Comerica Park.
