HAMMONTON, N.J. (WPVI) — A massive fire broke out at the Frog Rock Golf and Country Club in Hammonton, New Jersey, early Tuesday morning.

The Hammonton Fire Department was called out to the 400 block of Boyer Avenue in Atlantic County around 2:40 a.m. after reports of an explosion and fire.

When crews arrived, heavy fire was consuming the building, as well as extending to nearby greens and wooded areas, according to officials.

It took a couple hours to get under control.

The Hammonton fire chief says the explosion has not been confirmed yet, but neighbors reported hearing a loud boom that woke them up.

Officials say the blaze was at the main building, which was a multi-purpose structure, used for banquets and weddings.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the building was destroyed.

Chopper 6 flew over the scene, where charred remains of the building are all that’s left behind.

“Right now, what we’re doing is we have to go through overhaul so if there’s any hot spots, hidden fire, we’ll take care of that but right now we’re kind of assisting the investigation crew. Once they come in and deem they have everything they need then we can go in and essentially finish putting out the fire,” Chief Sean Macri said.

Action News also spoke to the owner of the club, 86-year-old Rocky Colasurdo. He bought the land 54 years ago and has worked basically ever job you can think at the property, including serving food in the clubhouse and mowing the grass on the course.

“My whole life went through my mind. How I started, what I bought, what I did, and then I kept on going,” Colasurdo said.

Investigators are still trying to figure out what caused the fire and possible explosion.

As for the building, Colasurdo says he’ll rebuild — if that’s what his kids want to do. As for the golf course, he said he plans to open it back up as soon as Wednesday.
