The executive chairman of News Corp Australia has demanded the Albanese government rule out changes to copyright laws that would allow artificial intelligence firms to scrape news, books and other content to train their models, describing it as an existential issue for the media.

Michael Miller laid out the Murdoch-controlled media giant’s pitch for tech regulation, calling on the government not to subsidise AI giants’ expansion, implement some sort of “social licence” that holds them accountable to harm, and follow through on the News Media Bargaining Code, a law that forced tech giants to compensate media outlets.
