Industry, Science and Resources Minister Tim Ayres has ruled out using taxpayer funds to subsidise the development of data centres in Australia for artificial intelligence giants like OpenAI, Google and Amazon, saying it will instead encourage private sector investment.
Speaking to The Australian Financial Review after announcing federal participation in a $600 million rescue package for Swiss mining giant Glencore’s struggling Mount Isa copper smelter this week, Ayres said the government’s role was to facilitate rather than fund the rampant demand for data centres.
