The Lions aren’t messing around

Feels like some very strong statements from Dom regarding Ah Chee considering he’s an out of contract player and they’ve already received what many construe as overs for Starcevich. Pick 16 is definitely overs as a neutral fan

– Brad

We’ll hear from Adelaide’s list boss Justin Reid on Trade Radio shortly, and his retort will be of interest.

But the Lions have turned up to play in this trade period. They extracted excellent value out of Brandon Starcevich, scooped up two excellent free agents for nothing and are now playing hardball over Callum Ah Chee. Oh, and they have comfortably acquired the points they’ll need to match a bid for top-five draft pick Dan Annable.

No wonder they’re so good.

Sydney’s Charlie Curnow play

On the Curnow/Swans murmurs, it seems as though a player/Pick 11/2026 first rounder is what the Blues might go for.

With names of the likes of Hayward and Rowbottom been thrown into discussions, do you think the Blues would want more if they’re involved, or a player of higher value like Gulden or Blakey?

– Tom

Carlton would be within its rights to ask for Errol Gulden or Nick Blakey, but it would receive a very rapid no from the Swans.

James Rowbottom(Getty Images)

James Rowbottom and/or Will Hayward would be excellent additions for Carlton though, for different reasons. Losing Charlie Curnow would be a bitter pill to swallow but either of those blokes would swiftly become fan favourties at the Blues. Rowbottom, pick 11 and a 2026 first rounder is getting closer to a valid deal and is certainly more compelling than Geelong’s offer.

Stalemate indeed. The Lions are digging in on Ah Chee and this one could go all the way to the deadline. These are quotes from Lions list boss Dom Ambrogio on Trade Radio.

“That’s slow going. The situation with Cal is not one of our choosing, our preference has always been to retain Cal. He’s been a great player for us. He’s loved his time at the Lions and we’ve loved having him.

“I’m not going to publicly negotiate Cal’s contract through the media, but we’ll have our conversations with Adelaide and see if they can produce something compelling for us.

“We’ve found it a bit difficult to understand why he’s looking at options elsewhere. If it was our situation to dictate he’d certainly stay at the Brisbane Lions.

“We’ve been pretty clear with Adelaide in terms of what is useful to us. We definitely need to be compelled to trade here. Whatever is put forward it needs to be something that suits our particular situation. We’d like to strengthen our draft hand this year and next year, so that’s up to Adelaide to come up with something that’s worth a dual premiership player who will provide five years of great service.”

Phil’s chook raffle

Is it worth Hawthorn trading off two eggs, hoping they don’t hatch. For an old chook, that in all reality could be in the boiler in another year or two. Or just stick to giving Essendon another ticket in the raffle

– Phil

I think this is about Zach Merrett, but who can really know for sure.

The silence from Hawthorn is deafening though. They’re gonna do something, and you know it’s going to be good…

The Jy Simpkin noise rumbles on

The case of Jy Simpkin, has he been pushed out of North or on his own accord and hows the likelyhood of him arriving at Vic park? (so bummed about clarry)

– Raye

It’s an interesting one. I doubt he’s been nudged by North, but it does seem like the Roos’ skipper is actively looking at his options. Simpkin isn’t being quite as aggressive in his pursuit as Zach Merrett, but if the story goes any further then his handle on the captaincy will be just as weak.

Marc McGowan from The Age reported last night that Collingwood is into Simpkin. Early days on that front, but we’re officially in “watch this space” territory.

Carlton’s father-son plans

Assuming the Blues use Pick 41 for Chesser, what might be expected to be used for Khamis and Ainsworth if they progress.

Will Pick 10 be enough to match a bid for Dean? If so, would they consider splitting the Silvagni compo for later picks?

– Tom

I do think the Blues will look to split a pick to make sure they’re covered for Harry Dean, but I think it’s more likely to be pick 10 that they offer up.

Harry Dean(Getty Images)

Carlton probably needs to be braced for the possibility that a bid comes for Dean as early as the top five in this draft. They’re not going to lose heaps in deals for Khamis and Chesser, but the Blues will also be loathe to dip too far into next year’s draft hand because Cody Walker is on the horizon. If they can get a little points upgrade from splitting pick 10 they should be fine for Dean this year.

Are the Saints being harshly marked?

I don’t really get the hype around st kilda not proceeding with the Aleer trade. Dozens of players SIGN contracts and then two years in they try and leave it. A club has backed off before anything was signed and suddenly that’s too far? Business is business.

– Luca

Business is indeed business, Luca, and the Saints are clearly not here to make any friends in their pursuit of greatness. In a way, that is to be commended.

The issue they could face in future though is that players talk, and player managers talk even more. They have been courting Leek Aleer for about 18 months, encouraged him to put himself out there and publicly request a trade and then have left him “shattered” with a change of heart. Other players will be paying attention to all this, and there’s a reason these things don’t happen very often.

It is fair to say that players are, more than ever, looking out for their own interests these days and perhaps this is just an example of a club looking after theirs. I’ve got no problem with that, but there will be consequences. Players and managers will be wary of dealing with St Kilda in the future in the wake of this.

1h agoThu 9 Oct 2025 at 11:16pmDeal Done: Brody Mihocek has been traded to MelbourneBrody Mihocek(Getty Images)

The first deal of day five has been made official and Brody Mihocek is a Demon.

Collingwood has received pick 61 and a 2026 third-rounder for Brody Mihocek and pick 71.

Happy with that, Demons fans? Reckon he’ll be a big boost to that forward line, which has clearly been lacking in the last couple of years.

Any takers for Steven May?

How likely is it for Steven May to leave Melbourne this late in the trade period?

– Marcus

It’s now looking increasingly likely that Steven May will be staying put at Melbourne after all. Tim Lamb told Trade Radio yesterday that he expects May to stay.

Steven May(Getty Images)

Curious to know if that’s because there was no external interest in May or if the Dees had a change of heart, or if May really pushed to stay.

Callum Ah Chee stalemate continues

Do you think the lions have finished their trade week now or is anything else brewing? (aside from Dev heading west) As far as I can see they’ve got the picks they need for Annable so the list management team might already be on the golf course.

– LionCub

The Lions have one key piece of business outstanding, and that is sorting out a potential Cal Ah Chee trade to Adelaide. According to Sam Edmund via SEN, there is still a pretty big gap between the two teams.

Apparently, Brisbane wants pick 16 or a future first from Adelaide. Adelaide is offering a future second.

Those tee times out at Brookwater might have to be put on hold for a few more days until this one gets sorted.

Giants say Aleer in ‘shock’ after abandoned Saints deal

Plenty of criticism continuing to come St Kilda’s way around the decision to walk away from a trade for Leek Aleer.

Giants football boss Jason McCartney says GWS would love to have the 21-year-old defender back.

“This wasn’t a difficult trade negotiation, that is just fact,” McCartney told Trade Radio.

“I am loathe to make comment on what other clubs are doing.

“Leek is absolutely shattered. He is more than welcome to play at the Giants next year but he is shock at the moment.”

Today’s latest Zinger, brought to you by Local Expert

Jack Steele Sidebottom. Has a nice ring to it.

Where to now for Leek Aleer?

any chance someone else goes after aleer and if so who

– Tim

GWS is reported to have tabled a “modest” three-year offer for Leek Aleer, but I’d imagine he’d have no shortage of other suitors.

His management is likely putting out feelers today to find out who else is keen.

The problem is clubs meticulously plan for these things months in advance and obviously did not know Aleer would be available as the Saints thing seemed a formality.

Is there someone with enough cap space floating about that can chuck a good offer at him?

I wonder whether the Dogs would have a crack, he’d be an excellent fit over there. The Giants’ cross-town rival, Sydney, also has a glaring need in their key position defensive stocks.

2h agoThu 9 Oct 2025 at 10:13pm

What else are the Pies up to?

Minus the miocheck move and noise around Nick Daicos has there been any other form of movement at the pies

– Bailey

The big one was obviously Clayton Oliver, but now that Oliver’s picked the Giants, I wonder where the Pies pivot.

If the Saints are really desperate to get rid of the Jack Steele money, the Pies could do much worse than having a crack at Steele.

Steele would surely find playing for the Pies more appealing than going to other clubs lower down the ladder.

Justin Leppitsch mentioned the midfield being the Pies’ priority yesterday, so expect the Pies to keep sniffing around any mids who are remotely available.

Here’s what we think on Geelong’s Curnow offer

So my view on this is that we’ve got to have some nuance and understand that not all draft picks are created equal.

Firstly, credit to the Cats for going all-in like that, they’re clearly keen on Charlie Curnow.

However, there’s no chance Carlton is accepting three picks that are going to end up in the 20s.

It’s similar to the problem Hawthorn has with Zach Merrett as well.

If the Cats and Hawks are both serious about getting these deals over the line, they’re both going to have to throw in some good young players. Whether they do that or not is another question.

Good on Carlton and Essendon for not accepting deals centred around what Bill Simmons affectionately calls  the “Poo Poo Platter” of picks.

I’ve also rated both the Blues and Dons not willing to state what they’d accept for Curnow and Merrett, that’s on the other teams.

Other nuggets from Davies’s chat with Trade Radio

Here’s what else caught my eye during Carlton GM Chris Davies’s chat with Trade Radio this morning:

Confirmed the Blues are in discussions with Gold Coast over Ben Ainsworth.Said there is “some chance” Mitch McGovern remains at the Blues next year.Would be “highly surprised” if a deal for Campbell Chesser doesn’t get done over the next few days.3h agoThu 9 Oct 2025 at 9:47pmCarlton not happy with Geelong’s offer for Charlie Curnow

Carlton’s football boss Chris Davies is on Trade Radio, and it’s fair to say there’s still work to be done if Geelong wants to get Charlie Curnow out of the club.

Here’s Davies on that reported trade offer of three first-rounders tabled by the Cats.

“Importantly, the club’s position has been that we don’t want Charlie to be leaving Carlton, and that’s the first thing we should all be aware of here,” he said.

“The second part of this conversation is understanding what three first-round picks might actually look like and, for Geelong, those three picks are effectively going to be picks in the 20s.

“If that’s what the offer ends up being – notwithstanding the fact that we don’t want Charlie to go – I’m not sure anyone would think that’s a reasonable deal for who Charlie Curnow is.

“What has been clear from day one is that we’re not going to be in a position we’re having to suggest to other clubs what we think Charlie’s worth, we want Charlie to stay.

“I’m not going to get into what we think Charlie’s worth other than to say we want Charlie to be at Carlton.

“We value him far more than what some other people are suggesting around the competition he’s worth.”

Righto Cats, over to you then.

The fallout has continued from St Kilda’s decision to walk away from trading for Leek Aleer after wooing him for two years.

Aleer’s manager, Dylan Smith, provided Nine with an explosive statement, saying his client is “livid”.

“This came as an absolute shock,” Smith said.

“They’ve been whining [sic] and dining for him for two years. They loved where he was at and finally turned his head.

“They got him in, had the meetings and convinced him that the Saints was where he should be. It was a good fit. It was a career move and a four-year [contract] playing alongside Jack Silvagni and others.

“Today they backflipped because they don’t have the picks for him … They couldn’t get a future second-rounder for him.

“Leek is not happy and to be honest, livid with the situation. Clubs have rung me and said, ‘It’s a disgrace, what have they done?’ Nobody from the Saints has spoken to him.”
