Chaz Mostert’s day might have come to an unfortunate early end, but the two-time Bathurst 1000 winner made the most of a bad situation by enjoying a beer with locals only minutes after his race was done in touching scenes at Mount Panorama.
Mostert declined a ride back to the pits after he and co-driver Fabian Coulthard’s Ford Mustang S650 “carked it” on lap 59.
The drivers battled gear issues earlier in the day, and a bad sounding car eventually parked up beside the track.

Mostert then took the chance to make the most of the disappointing circumstance, accepting a beer from a fan – much to the delight of the crowd.
“Oh my bet was how long before he gets a beer!” six-time Bathurst champion Mark Skaife said on Fox Motorsport’s commentary.
“How long was that?
“That was Winx odds to get on that one then.
“Standing ovation for Chaz Mostert drinking a beer at Bathurst (laughing).”

While it was a disappointing finish for Mostert, he still made sure to make time for all those who approached him in the paddock.
“It’s a little earlier than typical beer o’clock when you drive at Bathurst but that will do!” former racing driver turned Supercars commentator Neil Crompton said.
“Can only be Bathurst. Can only be this country.”
Skaife laughed as footage rolled of Mostert standing with fans rolled.
“He’s having the day of his life up there – his car is stopped, he’s having a ripping afternoon,” he said.

Despite the frustration, WAU team boss Ryan Walkinshaw could appreciate what Mostert was doing with fans.
“Obviously not the way we wanted the day to end,” he said.
“Chaz is on the mountain having a beer with the fans – probably the happiest he’s been all weekend.
“Not sure we’re going back able to get him back before the end of the race – he looks pretty set up here!”
Mostert’s race ended shortly after the first safety car of the race.
“What a shame!” Neil Crompton said.
“Started off the second row of the grid. It’s a sad end watching that car coast to the end.
“He knows his day is done.”
Lowndes & Tander have close call early! | 00:37
Coulthard had said the team was “soldiering on” after he struggled to maintain power from third to fourth gear.
It is sadly the first time Mostert has failed to finish the Bathurst 1000.
When Coulthard took the car into the pits after struggling with the gear issue, the team asked him which gear was the problem – he replied: “all of them!”
“That doesn’t sound right!” Neil Crompton said of car 25.
“Sounds like a tractor!”
