Jackson Blake, son of former Maple Leafs forward Jason Blake, signed a huge contract extension late on Thursday night, the team announced on social media.

It’s not too typical that we see any moves being made late in the evening when it comes to signings and trades. Sure, it happens, but there is no real consistent pattern. One night can have several deals or weeks can go by without.

The Carolina Hurricanes announced they had re-signed Jackson Blake, son of former NHL player Jason Blake, to an 8-year, $45-million extension and believe he’s one of their potential future stars.

The extension begins in the 2026-27 season, and is a contract that will go by through wayside come that season when the new CBA kicks in.

One year still remains on his entry-level contract, hence the reason for the delayed kick in regarding the contract.

Blake, 21, had 34 points in his first season in the NHL (17 goals, 17 assists) with 30 PIM and a plus-10 rating; he also chipped in 30 hits and 19 blocks as well.

It’s also a huge turnaround for Blake, who was drafted 109th overall in 2021 and has quickly found himself with a contract that gives him more money through his first 81 games than his father made in 871.

A standout at the University of North Dakota, he scored 102 points in 79 games (38 goals, 64 assists) which gives his draft number a bit of pause, as it’s a wonder why teams passed him over until pick #109.

His father Jason had quite the career for himself over his 13-year NHL journey. Going undrafted, he made his name as a reliable goal scoring option after leaving Los Angeles and heading to the Islanders.

He spent two seasons with the Maple Leafs before being traded to the Anaheim Ducks and quietly retiring; Blake also suffered from chronic myelogenous leukemia in his career though heroically played through it.

If there’s one thing certain though, Jason is a proud father right now; though maybe he may ask his son to pick up the bill next time.
