Emmerdale spoilers follow.

Emmerdale’s Cain Dingle has made a dramatic return to the village, taking his anger out on his loved ones in sad scenes. Cain recently came back to the Dales after he got arrested during his ill-advised mission to find John Sugden and avenge Nate. In tonight’s episode, Cain revealed what really happened during his time in France.

“You were right. It was all a waste of time,” he told Moira.

“I didn’t have a clue where to look.”

Cain said he met with an army pal of John’s, but they hadn’t heard from him in years. “I should’ve finished him off when I had the chance,” Cain said, but Moira was having none of the self-commiseration.

She quizzed Cain about what he did to get arrested and he revealed his failed mission led to some heavy drinking and self-destructive behaviour, which got him in trouble with the police.

Moira then reminded Cain of his dad Zak’s death anniversary and his plan to pay his respects with Belle and Sam later on.

After saying he would go and snapping at Moira, Cain headed out. Liam found him drinking on his own at the garage, and the GP tried to reason with him about losing a child. But Cain reminded him that Leanna’s killer was behind bars but he would never have justice for Nate as John was on the run.

At the Woolpack, Moira found Sam and Belle having a drink and reminiscing about their dad. She said Cain promised he would join them, though she seemed unconvinced.

Later on, Belle and Sam had a heart-to-heart at Zak’s grave. Disappointed in Cain for not showing up, Sam told Belle that their brother may not fit to be head of the family.

“He’s not himself, Sam. Don’t be angry at him,” Belle said. “I don’t know how we’re gonna get through to him.”

In an emotional chat with Zak, Belle promised their dad they would look after Cain.

“Even if he doesn’t want us to,” she added.

At home, Cain lost his temper with his son Kyle, who wanted to show his dad his award for Man of the Match.

Kyle started asking question about Cain’s trip to France and resented him for calling and not making it back in time for his big match.

“You said you would,” he told his dad.

Kyle repeatedly pressed his dad for answers, but Cain snapped at him and accidentally knocked over the award, which broke in half.

“You broke it,” Kyle said.

“I wouldn’t have if you hadn’t been going on!” Cain yelled.

“As I said to you, just give me a minute, didn’t I? But you wouldn’t. None of you would. I just wanna be left alone,” he added before storming out.

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
