The New Jersey Devils and No. 1 goaltender Jacob Markstrom are having discussions on a long-term extension, TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston reports.
The 35-year-old is currently in the final year of a six-year, $36 million contract that he signed with the Calgary Flames in 2020.
“They’ve exchanged some ideas. They’ve had recent discussions on what an extension might look like. I’m told that the talks have been healthy and they’ll resume negotiations in the very near future,” Johnston said Thursday on Insider Trading. “There is a mutual interest between the veteran goaltender and the New Jersey Devils to get something done.
“I’m told the Devils absolutely love Jacob Markstrom, he’s great in the room. But there is a negotiation that still has to take place here and with everything there’s always a gap. So until that gap closes, the deal isn’t done.”
Markstrom is currently week-to-week as he deals with a lower-body injury sustained in Monday’s 3-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Galve, Sweden native came in for the third period in relief of Jake Allen, who left due to cramping, and stopped eight of nine shots to earn the win. However, he appeared to sustain the injury on a scramble in front of the net in the dying moments of the game.
In three appearances this season, Markstrom has a 2-1-0 record with a 3.89 goals-against average and .845 save percentage.
He was acquired from the Calgary Flames during the 2024 off-season and posted a 26-16-6 record with a 2.50 GAA, .900 save percentage, and four shutouts in 49 starts in his first season with the Devils.
For his career, Markstrom has tallied a 243-213-63 record with a 2.71 GAA and .908 save percentage in 519 starts.
