Members of North Shore United and the wider football community in Auckland are mourning the loss of long-time volunteer Bill Lissington, who has died aged 64.
A Life Member at North Shore United, Lissington committed countless hours as a volunteer, supporting many aspects of the club from raising sponsorship funding to acting as team manager for the club’s senior men’s teams.
In a tribute to him, the club’s board said: “Bill has always been a keen volunteer and in the last 10 or so years has given a huge amount of his personal time and passion to the club.”
He had followed the progress of his son Harry through the grades and into the club’s first team, for whom he has played more than 100 games.
“He has led the sponsorship efforts for all this time, raising the money necessary to fund the high-performance programme.
“More recently, he also took on the role of first team and reserves manager, dedicating a significant amount of his time to supporting the coaching team and enabling these teams to present themselves and perform to their best on and off the pitch.
“In 2023, he was recognised for his dedication and passion for North Shore United by being presented with the honour of life membership.”
Lissington suffered a medical event while supporting the club’s U-19 team at Western Springs on Saturday October 11, 2025. He died at Auckland Hospital, surrounded by family members, two days later.
He is survived by his children, Harry and Madeline, his parents, his brother and his sister.
Bill Lissington’s farewell will be on Thursday October at North Shore United’s Allen Hill Stadium clubrooms, starting at 11am.
