Former Major League Baseball top prospect and New York Yankees catcher Jesus Montero has died. He was 35 years old.

Montero died after being involved in a wreck in Venezuela earlier this month, according to the Associated Press.

The report states that Montero was on his motorcycle on Oct. 4 when he crashed into a truck. He had been hospitalized since the crash and was in critical condition. Montero was unable to recover from the injuries and it was revealed on Sunday that he has died.

“Venezuelan baseball sadly bids farewell to Jesus Montero … leaving behind a legacy of effort and passion for the game,” the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League posted Sunday on X. “Today, baseball mourns his passing. But it also remembers him with gratitude: for every home run that thrilled the fans, for every day in which he proudly defended his country’s colors, and for every young person who saw in him an example that dreams can be achieved.”

Jesus Montero spent five seasons playing Major League Baseball after being ranked as one of the top prospects in the game during his minor league career.

He made his MLB debut with the Yankees in 2011, appearing in 18 games and hitting .328 with four home runs and 12 RBIs.

Montero was traded to the Mariners ahead of the 2012 season and would go on to spend the next four seasons with the Seattle franchise.

For his career, Montero hit .253 with 28 home runs and 104 RBIs across 226 games.
