Parkinson’s patients cycling classes improve symptoms

  • October 22, 2025

PARKVILLE, Mo. (KCTV) – A diagnosis like Parkinson’s disease can be disheartening and make one lose confidence. But at the Platt County Y, participants in Pedal for Parkinson’s are gaining back that confidence through exercise.

What may look like a simple cycling class is much more than what meets the eye.

‘Pedaling 4 Parkinson’s’ is a cycling class for individuals living with Parkinson’s,” said Sarah Srock, Y Platte County Healthy Living Director.

Three days per week, participants pedal it out for an hour, helping improve symptoms of the disease. Those symptoms include tremors, stiffness, and walking difficulties, among other movement issues. The class provides a sense of community for those with the disease.

“These are parkies that are with me, and we’re learning,” said Pamela Cook, a class participant.

Cook said she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s five years ago and was incredibly disheartened, as she’s always been active. She continued exercising through boxing and now, cycling. She describes how the class has helped her.

“This has really helped my spirit, and I’ve met some really great people,” Cook said. “It’s a great confidence builder.”

That confidence and improvement in symptoms isn’t just noticed by participants. Organizers see it, too.

“When I first learned about this program several years ago, I immediately fell in love with it, and I was able to see the difference it makes,” Srock said.

Through the trials and tribulations the disease can bring, Cook said she’s learned one thing through the program she hopes anyone struggling will hear.

“Don’t stop having faith in yourself,” Cook said.

All participants encourage anyone struggling with Parkinson’s to come out, try a class, and join their community.
