JERSEY boxer Charlie Corbel has struck gold at the England Boxing Development Championships, winning the national title in the Under-63.5kg category after a superb display in the final.
The 20-year-old, who began his career with Jersey Leonis Amateur Boxing Club, produced a composed and clinical performance to defeat Amjad Danyaal by unanimous decision (5–0), capping off a memorable campaign.
Now boxing under Islington Boxing Club while studying at university, Corbel had already turned heads by battling through the fiercely competitive London division, regarded as one of the toughest routes in the country, before securing his place at the national finals.
His semi-final saw a rare Jersey vs Guernsey encounter, as he overcame Tyler Quintal from the Guernsey Amalgamated Boxing Club to earn his shot at gold.
“It’s an outstanding result and fully deserved,” said Miguel Ferreira, manager of Jersey Leonis ABC.
“Charlie’s been training with us since he was a boy and spent the whole summer putting in the hard work before heading back to London. His attitude and focus has been brilliant, and this is a huge reward for that dedication.”
Corbel’s development has been steady and impressive. From the Leonis juniors to the national stage, he has earned a reputation for his fantastic performances in the ring.
In a touching moment after the fight, Corbel dedicated the victory to his mother, handing her his gold medal.
