Newman featured on SAFM Breakfast
Growing up a mad Crows fan, a young Maddi Newman would idolise her heroes in the tri-colours and their exploits on the Showdown stage.
Little did she know that one day she would play an active role in the legacy of football’s greatest rivalry, as she gears up to play in her fourth AFLW Showdown at Norwood Oval on Friday night.
In the build-up to the blockbuster clash, Newman joined Port Adelaide ruck Matilda Scholz on SAFM Breakfast to chat about the rivalry and how it has grown in the women’s game.
She explained how proud she was to play a part in the iconic South Australian fixture.
“I was a massive Crows fan growing up, so I always dreamt of these types of games, so to be involved as a player now is very surreal,” Newman said.
“I didn’t have that female player as a role model growing up as a Crows fan, I grew up looking up to the likes of Andrew McLeod and what they were able to do in games like this.
“So to be able to be involved in the Showdown now as a player and for little girls to be able to see women playing in the rivalry, it’s very humbling.”
Adelaide faces Port Adelaide at Norwood Oval on Friday night, with the first bounce at 7.05pm.
