An overwhelming majority of F1 fans believe Lewis Hamilton’s penalty at the Mexico City Grand Prix was too harsh.

The seven-time champion was running in third place early on as he went in chase of his first podium result for Ferrari.

However, on lap six, Hamilton went side-by-side with Max Verstappen into Turn 4. In the heat of battle, he failed to navigate the corner and ran wide.

While the 40-year-old was excused by the stewards for not using the designated escape road to re-join the track, Hamilton was punished for gaining an advantage by running wide.

He was hit with a 10-second time penalty, which he served during his first pit stop. Hamilton eventually ended the race in eighth place.

It prompted RacingNews365 to ask you, the fans, if you believed Hamilton’s penalty was too harsh.

Over 82 per cent of votes determined that it was. 52 per cent of this group feel Hamilton should have been punished at all, while 30 per cent believe a five-second time penalty was warranted.

Only 18 per cent of voters think that the penalty was justified.
