TWO famous names in Australian motorsport are set to combine for the upcoming TA2 Muscle Car Series endurance race at Queensland Raceway, with Ben Bargwanna and Clay Richards likely to be a front-running pair.

While Bargwanna has been a fixture in the Trico Trans Am series since the start of the season, Richards only recently took delivery of his Mustang from Mark Crutcher, with this weekend being his first run in the car.

The third-generation racers will share Bargwanna’s regular Hangcha Forklifts-backed machine for the event.

It is a reunion of sorts for the two families, after Jason Bargwanna and Steven Richards started the 1998 V8 Supercars Championship as teammates at Garry Rogers Motorsport, before Richards departed to the UK and linked up with the Nissan Super Touring squad.

“It’s going to be really exciting, a two-driver event in these cars, like, I love these cars so much,” said Ben Bargwanna.

“Clay is having his first run at Sandown this weekend, and to team up with him is really special.

“We grew up racing together, we raced against each other for quite a few years, especially in TCR, and obviously our fathers raced against each other too.

“It’s going to be really special out there all together, Dad and Steve will be on the tools, Clay and I will be driving, we’re going to have an absolute ball.

“We’re going to learn a lot, we’re both still learning these cars, so it’s going to be like a big test day for us.

“We’ll be using my car, it’s going to have Hangcha Forklifts on the side… both cars are the same anyway, either car, it doesn’t matter.”

At Sandown this weekend for Richards’ debut in the class, the two outfits are buddied up, with the pair cooperating in elements of their preparation.

“We’re working together a little bit, each running our own shows, but we’re just going to scratch each other’s backs when it comes down to it,” said Bargwanna.

“If it hits the fan, we’re all going to jump on and help each other.

“We’re just going to help learn together, it’s good to have some feedback from another car, learn off and bounce off.”

In other teams already announced, Craig Lowndes will make his TA2 debut when he lines up alongside Jarrod Hughes, while Tim Slade will share with Alice Buckley.

Elsewhere, George Miedecke will line up alongside Joshua Webster at Marcos Ambrose Motorsport.

The event is set for August 15-17.
