More people died from influenza than COVID-19 in a month for the first time since the height of the pandemic, according to national figures.
In August 2025, 265 people died from or with influenza compared with 195 deaths associated with COVID-19, show Australian Bureau of Statistics figures, released on Thursday.
It was the first month that influenza was more deadly than COVID-19 since February 2020, before anyone in Australia had died from SARS-CoV-2 in the pandemic.
Between January and August 2025, deaths involving COVID-19 were lower than the previous two years, whereas deaths involving influenza and respiratory syncytial virus were higher, the figures showed.
