Caravanning is becoming increasingly popular as Aussies hit the open road and document their seemingly glamorous holidays travelling around our vast country. Images of spectacular landscapes and exciting wildlife encounters flood social media, leaving many to wonder if they should also jump on the caravanning bandwagon.
But if you needed a little shade from the light shining on caravanning holidays right now, this video might provide a reality check.
A truckie from Grafton in northern NSW captured the moment his wife Korrine was dumping the family’s caravan toilet, lovingly referred to as the ‘devil’s suitcase’, into a campground dump point, and the experience was so horrendous, she was left “dry heaving” by the side of the road.
“I was towing the caravan out and my wife said we’d better call in and empty the toilet on the way out,” Brenton Smith told Yahoo News. “She jumped out, and that’s when I could see her heaving… The smell from the pit got her, and I think some splashed up on her hand. Me and the two kids were just in the car laughing.
“She’s got a bit of a weak stomach at the best of times… It can’t be that bad.”
Notably, Brenton admitted he hasn’t yet done the toilet emptying task.

Truckie claims dumping the caravan toilet is ‘as bad as it gets’
Brenton and his family, who travelled over 260 kilometres on their maiden journey in their new caravan, were excited about the prospect of exploring more of Australia. Despite it being his first caravan journey with his family, Brenton has been “camping all his life” and said the dumping of the caravan toilet is “as bad as it gets”.
“Being able to just have a shower and everything in our own little house on wheels, it’s awesome,” he said. “I’d say the toilet dumping is the worst of it. It’s usually very comfortable.”
Korrine isn’t the first to be filmed tackling the horrendous task, with Sydney woman Brooke Goosen caught on camera dumping her family’s toilet into a designated dump site last year. She told Yahoo News, “it was foul” and found the whole system “outdated”.
“If we’re getting rockets into space, surely there’s a better way,” she said.

Ashley Moy, a dad who was staying in Alice Springs with his family in June, had to go one step further and put his hand down the dumping site after the cap of his caravan toilet fell in along with the waste. A video captured him armed with a pair of tongs standing by the dump site as he tightly wound up his sleeves and plunged his arm down to retrieve the cap.
He told Yahoo News it was too “important” to leave behind. He managed to grab it, but was left gagging from his efforts.
