Melbourne Storm forward Eli Katoa suffered “seizure activity” and underwent surgery overnight after a series of head clashes in Tonga’s match with New Zealand on Sunday.
Katoa was allowed to play in the Pacific Championship Test despite copping a heavy knock from teammate Lehi Hopoate in the pre-game warm-up.
He then copped another high hit in the first half and passed a HIA test, before again being hit in the head in the second half.
In concerning scenes, Katoa was pictured on the sidelines receiving oxygen from medical staff while laid out on a stretcher.
The Storm said it was in touch with Tonga’s Chief Medical Officer after concerns were raised about how Katoa had been allowed to play after the pre-game collision.
“Melbourne Storm forward Eli Katoa was taken to hospital after suffering seizure activity on the bench during the second half of yesterday’s Pacific Championships match between Tonga and New Zealand,” a Storm statement read on Monday morning.
“Eli underwent surgery overnight and is in a stable condition being supported by his partner and mother. Storm medical staff remain in close contact with the hospital and Tonga’s team Chief Medical Officer.
“The club will provide a further update as additional information becomes available.”
Katoa posted an image to Instagram on Monday morning from his hospital bed, thanking everyone for their concern.
“Appreciate everyone for checking in,” he wrote.
“Sorry I haven’t got back to any of you guys but I really appreciate all the love.”
