The Italian supply chain continues to attract the luxury heavyweights. Following Chanel, fellow French luxury house Hermès has now set its sights on a centre of Italian excellence, confirming to FashionNetwork.com that it has acquired a minority stake in Lanificio Colombo.

Hermès explained that “the transaction forms part of the French company’s vertical integration strategy.” When contacted on the matter, Lanificio Colombo declined to comment.
According to press reports, the deal would give the house a 15% stake in the Piedmont-based company and will deepen synergies between the Italian manufacturer and Hermès, which produces most of its creations in France through an extensive network of manufacturing sites.
Lanificio Colombo, founded in Borgosesia by textile entrepreneur Luigi Colombo, specialises in the production of cashmere and noble fibres, including yangir, guanaco, vicuña, and camel hair.
In the third quarter of its financial year, Hermès reported sales up by 5% to €3.9 billion. Supporting the company’s results was the “slight improvement” in sales in Europe, the Americas and Asia, led by the leather goods division.
To meet growing demand for handbags, the group confirmed more than €1 billion of investment this year and will open three additional leather goods workshops in France over the next three years.
In October, Hermès appointed designer Grace Wales Bonner as creative director of menswear, replacing Véronique Nichanian, who will present her final collection for the maison next January in Paris after 37 years with the house.
