Broncos premiership winning coach Michael Maguire has been linked with the England coaching post after Shaun Wane oversaw a horror 3-0 Ashes whitewash at the hands of the Kangaroos.

The Daily Telegraph reported Maguire has been linked to taking over from Wane ahead of the 2026 World Cup on Australian soil, following England’s disappointing showing in the Ashes series.

Wane is feeling the heat and is at risk of losing England’s top job after losing the Ashes series to Australia at home in emphatic fashion.

The 61-year-old has coached England to 10 wins and four losses since taking the job in 2021, but could pay the price for their horror performance in the 2025 Ashes series.

English fans believe Wane’s coaching style relies on pride and passion over tactical nous, which was evident in their displays against the Kangaroos.

England showed plenty of grit in defence, but their attack was woeful at times and they only scored three tries all series.

Leeds fans were angry at Wane after the third Test, chanting: “You’re getting sacked in the morning.”

Wane was pressed on his future in his post match press conference after the 30-8 third Test defeat.

“I don’t believe – I know I am,” Wane said when asked if he was the man to guide England to the World Cup.

“The only people I want (to back me) are the players and staff and I know I have that.”

Maguire coached New Zealand to 12 wins and six losses from 2018 to 2023, including a World Cup semi-final defeat to the Kangaroos and a 30-0 thumping of Australia in his final match in charge in the 2023 Pacific Championships final.

Maguire has history in England having coach Wigan to a Super League title in 2010, before going on to win premierships with the Rabbitohs (2014) and the Broncos (2025).

He also won his only Origin series for the Blues 2-1 in 2024.

‘Going to improve’ Walsh | 04:13

Maguire has flown to England on a 12-day study trip with Broncos football manager, Troy Thompson, sparking reports he may meet with England officials.

“I can’t wait to get over there,” Maguire told The Daily Telegraph.

“Coaching is all about finding another level.

“I’m going over there to explore new ways of doing things.”

It remains to be seen if the Broncos would be happy for Maguire to coach an international team, along with his NRL commitments.
