A flicker of tension appeared in the Nys household last weekend — a reminder that even Belgium’s most famous cycling family isn’t immune to a bit of friction. For all their shared success in cyclocross, Niels Albert believes father and son Sven and Thibau Nys couldn’t be more different in temperament, attitude, and approach to the sport.
Speaking to HLN, the former world champion offered a fascinating insight into the generational gap between the two. “Thibau is basically the complete opposite of his father. In terms of attitude, he’s actually more like me than Sven,” Albert said. “There are two full generations between them, and I think riders like Thibau approach the sport in a totally different way.”
Albert suggested that Sven’s legendary attention to detail — sometimes bordering on obsession — simply doesn’t fit the younger Nys’ character. “Sven would go so far as to weigh every bottle of still water, almost to the point of mania,” Albert laughed. “Thibau, on the other hand, is the sort of guy who’d say, ‘Come on, dad, stop nagging.’ I can just picture him saying that. I’m sure it drives Sven a bit mad — but that’s part of the fun.”
“A better all-round rider than his father”
While the differences between them are clear, Albert also sees huge potential in Thibau’s more relaxed approach. “His riding style does remind me of his father — it has to come from somewhere,” he admitted. “But as a rider, I think he’s completely different from Sven. I actually believe he has more talent, in the sense that he can also perform on the road. Sven was a phenomenal cyclocross rider, but Thibau has abilities that his father didn’t have. He’s a better all-rounder.”
Despite his once-fierce rivalry with Sven Nys, Albert has become one of Thibau’s biggest supporters. What impresses him most, he says, is the young Belgian’s personality. “In recent years, most riders have been very polite and restrained,” Albert reflected. “Thibau always speaks his mind, isn’t afraid to express his ambitions, and wants to prove himself. I like that — it’s refreshing.”
It’s an endorsement that comes from one of the sport’s most uncompromising figures, and it adds another intriguing layer to the dynamic within Belgium’s first family of cyclocross.
