The ATP Tour grind can eat away at even the toughest of players.

In recent weeks, there have been complaints regarding the tour’s scheduling after various high-profile names withdrew from the Canadian Open, including Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz.

Alexander Bublik, who has won back-to-back titles in Gstaad and Kitzbuhel, has also withdrawn from the tournament.

However, various names remain across the men’s and women’s competitions in Toronto and Montreal, with the likes of Coco Gauff and Alexander Zverev headlining the respective tournaments.

On Sunday evening, it was revealed that another player who has won back-to-back titles has withdrawn from the Canadian Open.

Luciano Darderi has enjoyed a superb two weeks on the ATP Tour, after securing his third ever ATP Tour title in Bastad, the Italian went back-to-back by winning the Umag Open the following week.

Remarkably, the Italian has now won three ATP Tour titles in 2025, one more than his compatriot Jannik Sinner.

However, on Sunday evening, it was reported that Darderi has withdrawn from the Canadian Open.

The reason behind his withdrawal is yet to be confirmed. However, the Italian appeared to twist his ankle when celebrating victory in Umag and had to be helped off the court by opponent Carlos Taberner.

Darderi will reportedly be replaced by Czechia’s Dalibor Svrcina. The Czech player has qualified as a lucky loser despite being defeated by Yosuke Watanuki in qualifying.

As a result, Svrcina will face Alexander Blockx in the Canadian Open first round.

Darderi reflects on ‘crazy’ two weeks

Speaking after his victory in Umag, Darderi thanked his dad and coach, Luciano Enrique Darderi, while reflecting on a ‘special’ month.

“It is something special for me.

“The last month has been crazy. I just want to thank my dad and my whole team. Without them it would be impossible. I am very happy about the title.

“It was two crazy weeks. If you told me this two weeks ago, I’d say it was impossible. But I am very happy with my performance and my tennis was incredible this week. I will try to rest now and continue to play like this in the next week on hard courts.”

With victory in Umag, Darderi has moved up to world number 35. If he can continue his good form, the Italian could be a seeded competitor when the US Open starts in August.
