Wesley Sneijder says he’d only have signed for Celtic or Rangers under one condition – that they played one another ’18 times a season.’

The Dutch legend, whose storied career took him to Real Madrid and Inter but never brought him to the UK, has been retired since 2019.

At his pomp he won the Champions League under Jose Mourinho in Milan while he was also a key part of the Netherlands side who made the World Cup Final against Spain in 2010.

There was a point though when a move to Scotland might just have been on the cards. When he left Galatasaray in 2017, he was well in his 30s and short of elite offers – but opted for a short spell at Nice before wrapping things up at Al-Gharafa in Qatar.

His brother Rodney did have a short-lived stint in Scotland – but flopped at Dundee United in 2015 and was let go after a single appearance.

But did Sneijder ever consider an SPFL spell of his own? Not exactly…

He was asked by AdventureGamers.com if the option of signing for the Old Firm ever came up and he said. “Never, but if they’d let me play Celtic vs Rangers 18 times in a season like they do, then I would have considered it!

“It was never a goal I set myself to play in Scotland, but I love to watch the Old Firm games. Celtic vs Rangers, for me, was always special with all the Dutch players over there.

“Michael Mols, Ronald de Boer and Arthur Numan, they all did a great job there, but I never considered it.”
