Like almost every team in baseball, the Red Sox make it a habit of not publicizing their payroll budget. It’s long been club policy to keep that confidential, since revealing too much could put them at a competitive disadvantage.
Instead, they speak in generalities about a willingness to put a playoff-level team on the field and assure fans that ownership has always, when appropriate, given the green light when it comes to spending.
