Australia’s two main conservative parties are expected to agree on a new policy position on Sunday that would abandon the goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions – the global target required to stave off environmentally destructive climate change.

The Liberal Party has at the same time also declared that, if elected, it would remain a signatory to the Paris Agreement, a 2015 pact to limit global average temperature increases to “well below 2 degrees above pre-industrial levels” by the end of the century.
