The Edmonton Oilers are likely done when it comes to signing free agents.
After signing Andrew Mangiapane on the opening day of free agent frenzy, alongside a couple of AHL additions, GM Stan Bowman was rather quiet this time around. Most of the work was done through trade, shipping off contracts like those of Evander Kane and Viktor Arvidsson while acquiring the reigning Hobey Baker winner, Ike Howard.
Edmonton was also busy retaining players like Evan Bouchard, Kasperi Kapanen, and Noah Philp. All this work has left little cap room for the team to add any of the more notable free agents still looking for work, but it hasn’t completely shut the door on another new addition.
With training camp a little over a month away, the possibility of a PTO or two seems more than likely for the Oilers to add a little bit more competition to the current group.
Here are nine players Edmonton could look into giving a tryout once training camp begins:
1. Brett Leason, RW
Age: 26
Previous team: Anaheim Ducks
2024-25 stats: 5 G, 12 A, 17 PTS, 62 GP
If the Oilers want to add a bit of sandpaper into the mix, the six-foot-five, 220-pound Brett Leason would do the trick.
He’s a big body who isn’t afraid to throw hits, but his production could stand to be a bit more.
2. Jakub Vrana, LW
Age: 29
Previous team: Nashville Predators
2024-25 stats: 9 G, 5 A, 14 PTS, 39 GP
Jakub Vrana was once a reliable goalscorer in the NHL, but his stock has dropped considerably over the past couple of seasons.
He has bounced around to a couple of organizations and hasn’t played more than 26 games in a season since 2020-21. There is skill here if Vrana can stay healthy and consistent.
3. Max Pacioretty, LW
Age: 36
Previous team: Toronto Maple Leafs
2024-25 stats: 5 G, 8A, 13 PTS, 37 GP
Max Pacioretty’s injury history is well-documented, but a productive playoff run with the Toronto Maple Leafs proves he still has more to give.
The Oilers lost their elder statesman in Corey Perry earlier this summer; perhaps Patches could replace him.
4. Kevin Labanc, RW
Age: 29
Previous team: Columbus Blue Jackets
2024-25 stats: 2 G, 10 A, 12 PTS, 34 GP
The NHL’s preseason leader in goals last season didn’t live up to the hype in the regular season, as Kevin Labanc notched just two in 34 games with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Like Vrana, he was once noted as one of the NHL’s rising young stars but has fallen off in recent seasons. Could he find new life in the Alberta capital?
5. Klim Kostin, C/LW
Age: 26
Previous team: San Jose Sharks
2024-25 stats:Â 1 G, 6 A, 7 PTS, 35 GP
Klim Kostin has struggled to be a regular player on the league-worst San Jose Sharks last season, but the history is there for him in Edmonton.
He had his best NHL season with the Oilers in 2022-23 and became a fan favourite in the process. Is a reunion brewing?
6. Nathan Bastian, RW
Age:Â 27
Previous team: New Jersey Devils
2024-25 stats: 4 G, 6 A, 10 PTS, 59 GP
You could describe Nathan Bastian as a less interesting Brett Leason.
He’s a big body who has never really produced big at the NHL level. He could be a fallback option if the Oilers miss out on Leason and still covet a bigger forward.
7. Calvin de Haan, LD
Age: 34
Previous team: New York Rangers
2024-25 stats: 0 G, 8 A, 8 PTS, 47 GP
It feels like the Oilers like to give one or two veteran defenders a shot every single season, and Calvin de Haan fits that bill this time around.
Like many others on this list, he’s jumped around a bit, but still seems capable of filling a role as a depth defender.
8. Oliver Kylington, LD
Age: 28
Previous team: Anaheim Ducks
2024-25 stats: 1 G, 4 A, 5 PTS, 19 GP
The former Calgary Flames defender has struggled to find a stable home for a few seasons, but injuries have played a factor.
With Edmonton in need of some defensive depth, he could fill the role as a low-risk, high-reward type of player on a cheap deal.
9. Jon Merrill, LD
Age: 33
Previous team: Minnesota WildÂ
2024-25 stats: 2 G, 4 A, 6 PTS, 70 GP
Jon Merrill doesn’t have a lot to get excited about in his game, but he does provide a steady presence.
He could be a decent player to have during training camp to add some extra competition to the Oilers D corps.
