Hong Kong athletes bagged a total of three gold, two silver and four bronze medals at China’s top multi-sport event over the weekend.

In the men’s 50-metre freestyle event on Sunday, Ho claimed victory by finishing the race in 21.71 seconds, setting a new Hong Kong record and a personal best time.

Cycling star Lee and teammate Leung collected gold in the women’s madison in the track cycling event on Sunday. It was Lee’s second gold medal in this year’s National Games on Sunday.

Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law praised the swimming and cycling athletes for giving “full play to their skills in the competitions.”

Lee demonstrated “extraordinary capability,” the minister said, adding that she was “so proud” of Leung and Ho for winning their first gold medals at the National Games.

The city’s triathlon team – consisting of Oscar Louis Coggins, Robin Bent Edvin Thomas Elg, Cade Cameron Wright and Bailee Briana Brown – picked up a silver medal on Sunday in the mixed relay event.

The fencing team delivered two medals on Saturday, with men’s sabre representative Aaron Ho placing second and women’s epee fencer Kaylin Shieh winning bronze. Ho’s silver medal marked the first individual medal for the city’s men’s sabre team in National Games history.

The remaining two bronze medals won over the weekend came from Adam Mak in the men’s 200m breaststroke and Coggins in the men’s individual triathlon race.

The culture, sports, and tourism chief hailed on Saturday that Hong Kong athletes had “successfully written a new glorious chapter in the National Games” for the city.

As of Sunday, Hong Kong has won 14 medals – seven golds, two silvers, and five bronzes – in sailing, cycling, tennis, swimming, rugby, triathlon, and fencing at the 15th National Games.

In past National Games, the city won at most two gold medals.

According to the government, Hong Kong’s previous highest medal count was 16 during the 13th National Games in 2017. That year, it won two golds, seven silvers, and seven bronzes.
