NEW YORK (TNND) — A New York Police Department officer and two civilians near the corporate offices of the National Football League and Blackstone were shot by a man Monday evening.
The alleged shooter died by suicide on the 33rd floor of the building.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch posted to X, saying that the “lone shooter has been neutralized,” and that the scene is contained.
Police said that the man was walking around the office building in Midtown Manhattan and had a long rifle, according to CNN.
The suspect fled to the building after shooting the officer and civilians.
The NYPD officer was allegedly shot in the back and did not make it, CNN reports.
The Fire Department of New York said emergency crews were called to the Park Avenue office building Monday evening for a report of someone shot. A spokesperson said the call came in around 6:30 p.m. but provided no other details. Police provided no additional information.
Local TV footage showed lines of people evacuating the office building with their hands above their heads. The building includes offices of Blackstone, Deutsche Bank, JP Morgan and consulate general of Ireland.
FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino posted on X, saying that the FBI is “responding to provide support at the active crime scene in Manhattan.”
In another post, Bongino said that the FBI is on the scene, with “motive currently under investigation.”
New York City Mayor Eric Adams also posted to X, confirming the active shooter situation.
“New Yorkers: there is an active shooter investigation taking place in Midtown right now. Please take proper safety precautions if you are in vicinity and do not go outside if you are near Park Avenue and East 51st Street.”
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul posted to X, saying that she had been briefed on the situation, asking New Yorkers to avoid the area.
Law enforcement is currently on the scene at the building, located at 345 Park Avenue. The building is still on lockdown.
