British boxer Fabio Wardley has been crowned the heavyweight world champion after Oleksandr Usyk vacated the title.
The WBO confirmed they had received confirmation from Usyk that he wished to relinquish his title.
They said they are honouring the Ukrainian’s career and calling this step a respectful pause, not a farewell.
Wardley became the mandatory WBO challenger for Usyk after he defeated Joseph Parker last month, meaning he will now take over the belt.
Wardley reacted to the decision, tweeting: “#AndTheNew”
He shared posts from across the boxing world congratulating him on the achievement.
Known for his explosive knockout power and late-fight resilience, Wardley has become one of the division’s most talked-about figures.
He has compiled an unbeaten professional record of 20 wins, 0 losses, and 1 draw, with 19 victories coming by knockout.
