Keith has performed the song a few times before, saying of the track earlier this year, “I’m obsessed with ‘Pink Pony Club’ right now because it’s so well-written and has the most exquisite metaphor, for finding a place where you belong. To be clear, the song was inspired by The Abbey, a queer bar in West Hollywood. Also, sorry, rant time: Part of what makes “Pink Pony Club” such a brilliant song is the sense of longing behind it. There’s a sadness behind the call to “keep dancing” amid the political climate in which the song was released. None of this is a particularly deep or complex analysis — it’s right there in the song. What clowns.
