Anadolu Efes vs Barcelona Preview

Anadolu Efes survived a thriller against Bayern last week, blowing a double-digit fourth-quarter lead and ultimately allowing the Bavarians to get a shot for the win. Luckily for Igor Kokoskov’s team, they missed, and the points stayed in Turkey. Anadolu Efes now sits at 4-7, far from what anyone expected before the season. What’s even worse is the injury to Shane Larkin in that game. He will be out for almost two months, and the big question is whether anyone on this roster can take over the role of one of the greatest players in the club’s history. Nick Weiler-Babb handled most of the playmaking in the second half against Bayern, but that has never been his primary job.

Alongside Weiler-Babb, a huge burden will now fall on Isaia Cordinier, who had one of the best games of his career against Bayern with 26 points. Much more is expected from Jordan Loyd, who still hasn’t found the rhythm he had with Poland this summer during the EuroBasket, and without his scoring it’s hard to imagine Anadolu Efes threatening Barcelona. Even bigger problems exist in the frontcourt, where Kai Jones has provided almost nothing, forcing coach Kokoskov to play Rolands Smits and Ercan Osmani together – even though neither is a true center. Overall, the situation is far from ideal, and if Barcelona wins in Istanbul, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Kokoskov lose his job.

A coaching change has already happened in Barcelona, and Xavi Pascual will make here his debut in his second tenure with the club. More than 15 years have passed since he led Barcelona to the top of Europe, and he has certainly returned with the ambition to win another EuroLeague trophy. Between his arrival and the departure of Joan Penarroya, Barcelona secured wins over Bayern and Virtus, with Oscar Orellana – who will remain on Pascual’s staff – receiving plenty of praise. One of the main priorities will be improving Barcelona’s inconsistent defense, as it’s difficult to chase big results without toughness on that end. The biggest issues are under the basket: Willy Hernangomez is one of the worst defenders in the entire EuroLeague, while Jan Vesely is at an age where he no longer has the speed or mobility he once did.

What is certain is that Barcelona has plenty of offensive firepower. Kevin Punter and Will Clyburn are a duo capable of lighting up any defense in Europe, while players like Dario Brizuela and Nicolas Laprovittola can score 20+ on any given night. Tornike Shengelia has been Barcelona’s most impressive player so far this season, during which the team has won seven of eleven games. Usually a new coach takes over a struggling team with a bad record, but that’s not the case for Pascual. His starting position is more than solid, and if he brings any improvement, Barcelona can realistically aim not only for the top six but maybe even the top four. Player health will be key, though, as this is one of the oldest rosters in the league and the bench is not particularly deep.

Anadolu Efes vs Barcelona Best Betting Tip and Prediction

Anadolu Efes struggled massively to organize their offense even with a healthy Larkin and Dozier. Without them, it’s hard to imagine how this roster can create any kind of sustained advantage. Adding to that, the atmosphere inside the locker room is far from ideal. Barcelona, on the other hand, will certainly come in energized by the arrival of Xavi Pascual, and they also have the talent and health advantage. All in all, it would be a surprise if they don’t deepen the hosts’ crisis.
