Mario Cipollini, one of the most dominant and charismatic sprinters in cycling history, has confirmed that he has been admitted to hospital in Ancona for medical tests due to ongoing heart concerns. The 58-year-old, who famously won 42 stages of the Giro d’Italia and the 2002 Road World Championships, shared the news directly through his own social media channels, offering both clarity and reassurance to fans.

The former Italian star revealed that the situation follows earlier medical intervention: “Unfortunately I have a few problems, my heart keeps acting up a little,” he said, explaining that he previously underwent a procedure last year that involved the implantation of a loop recorder to monitor cardiac activity.

Cipollini stated that recent readings from the device showed irregularities that require further investigation, confirming that specialists will now perform an electrophysiological study to better understand the cause: “The recorder has indicated that something has not been working properly during this period. It means they go in through the groin with probes to re-stimulate certain areas and understand whether something harmful could be triggered.”

Among the potential medical responses under consideration is the implantation of a subcutaneous defibrillator, but Cipollini stressed that he remains optimistic and fully trusts the medical professionals overseeing his condition: “I really hope that will not be the case for me. I am in the hands of extremely well-prepared people and I have great confidence in the centre in Ancona. I am calm and relaxed.”

One of cycling’s greatest showmen

Cipollini, known worldwide as The Lion King, is remembered for redefining sprinting tactics through disciplined lead-out trains, as well as for his explosive finishing speed, record-setting success and flamboyant personality.

His palmares makes him one of the most successful pure sprinters in the history of the sport, including:

A record 42 Giro d Italia stage victories
12 Tour de France stage wins
Milan San Remo winner (2002)
World Road Race Champion (2002)17327706

Cipollini was the dominant sprint force of his generation

His 2002 season remains one of the most celebrated single-year campaigns by any sprinter, capped by the rainbow jersey earned in Zolder.

As the cycling world rallies in support, Cipollini has made it clear that he is approaching the situation with composure, confidence and trust in expert medical care. Further updates are expected once the hospital examinations have been completed.
