New South Wales police have used capsicum spray to subdue an 87-year-old man in a Sydney nursing home.
Police said the incident occurred at an aged care home in south-western Sydney on Wednesday at about 8pm.
Officers attended the facility “in response to the concern for welfare of a resident”, a police spokesperson said in a statement on Thursday.
“The man had reportedly threatened to harm other residents and himself, while armed with a metal object, swinging it at staff who locked themselves in a room,” police alleged.

The spokesperson alleged that when officers located the 87-year-old man in the foyer, he was “still armed with the metal ornament” and he “refused police direction to put it down and OC spray was deployed”.
The elderly man was restrained and assessed by paramedics before being taken to Campbelltown hospital. No physical injuries were reported during the incident, NSW police said on Thursday.
Camden police area command was reviewing the incident.
A NSW police officer fatally shot a 95-year-old great-grandmother with a Taser in a Cooma nursing home in May 2023.
Sen Const Kristian James Samuel White was subsequently found guilty of manslaughter in the NSW supreme court in November 2024.
