Kiwis halfback and 2024 Dally M Medallist Jahrome Hughes is set to play out his career in Melbourne after signing a four year contract extension with the Storm.
Already contracted for next year, Hughes will remain with the Storm until the end of the 2030 season.
Regarded as one of the game’s elite playmakers, Hughes has played a pivotal role in Melbourne’s sustained success since joining the club in 2017, winning a premiership in 2020.
Originally a fullback, Hughes has thrived in the No.7 jersey under the guidance of
Craig Bellamy.
“I’m delighted to extend my contract with Storm for another four years. I absolutely love this club, it’s become a second family to me, and Melbourne feels like home,” the Wellington-born playmaker said.
“This group of players, coaches, and staff is incredibly special, and I’m determined to achieve more success in the purple jersey. I’m excited for what lies ahead and the memories still to come.”
Melbourne Storm CEO Justin Rodski welcomed the news.
“We’re thrilled to have Jahrome locked in until 2030. He’s become a true leader and continues to perform at the highest level,” Rodski said.
“Jahrome embodies everything it means to be a Storm player, hard-working,
humble, and team first. His influence both on and off the field is invaluable, and we’re excited to see him continue his
journey with us.”
With 165 Storm appearances and 10 Test caps for New Zealand, Hughes remains a central figure in Melbourne’s premiership ambitions.
Hughes, who is currently sidelined with a dislocated shoulder, is expected to make a full recovery in time for Storm’s 2025 NRL finals campaign.
North Queensland playmaker Jake Clifford is determined to lock down a place in the Cowboys’ halves after signing a one-year extension with the club.
Clifford will remain in Townsville until the end of the 2026 campaign as he looks to form a long-term partnership with Tom Dearden.
The 27-year-old has endured a frustrating year on the injury front and has been sidelined since Round 18 with a quad injury.
Despite the physical struggles, the Cowboys expect him to play a key role in the club’s on-field resurgence.
“It is a tribute to Jake’s attitude and persistence that he has been able to come back to the club and compete for a spot and now when fit, he is in our best 17,” Football manager Micheal Luck said.
“Jake has one of the bigger boots in the NRL, he is a dangerous runner of the football and he is a strong defender.
“Jake is a proud North Queenslander with a young family and indicated his preference was to stay at home. We look forward to his contributions for the rest of this season and beyond.”
Emerging Rabbitohs forward Lachlan Hubner is set to become a permanent fixture in the South Sydney pack after signing a two-year contract extension.
Already locked down until the end of next season, Hubner will now remain with the club through to 2028.
The 24-year-old made his NRL debut for the Dolphins last year before following Wayne Bennett to South Sydney and has played in 20 games thus far this season.
“He is an incredibly hard worker on the field, a professional off the field, and he has gained valuable NRL experience this year in the absence of our captain, Cameron Murray,” Rabbitohs recruitment manager Mark Ellison said.
“‘Hubby’ is in a similar mould to Cam in that he doesn’t stop trying and competing the whole time he is on the field. He manages to find the energy needed, even if it means punching out the full 80 minutes.
“He has leadership qualities as well, as we are very happy to have him staying with us for a further two seasons.”
Raiders excitement machine Kaeo Weekes will call Canberra home until at least the end of 2029 after inking a further two-year contract extension.
Already signed until the end of 2027, the 21-year-old said he had no hesitation in signing on for two more years with the Green Machine.
“It’s really exciting actually, and I want to repay the faith that the club has shown in me,” Weekes said. “There will be a few good years coming ahead, and I can’t wait to be a part of it.
“When my manager told me I was like, ‘Oh yeah, cool’. I knew I wanted to stay here and if that means long-term I’m all for it. As soon as I got that contract I signed as quickly as I could.”
Now in his third season at Canberra after two years at Manly where he debuted in 2022, the flying fullback has scored 16 tries in 47 career games, including seven this season.
Broncos playmaker Jock Madden is set to return to the Wests Tigers after three years in Brisbane.
The 25-year-old made his debut for the Tigers in 2021, playing 17 games across two seasons.
Madden returns to the club on a two-year deal for the 2026 and 2027 campaigns.
“Jock is a smart player with a strong kicking game and a great work ethic,” coach Benji Marshall said.
“He will be a valuable addition to our squad on and off the field. We look forward to welcoming him back.”
Meanwhile, Rabbitohs winger Alex Johnston has signed a contract extension through to the end of the 2027 season as he continues his pursuit of Ken Irvine’s all-time tryscoring record.
Johnston has played 237 NRL games since making his debut for the Rabbitohs against the Broncos on ANZAC Day in 2014.
The 30-year-old has scored a record 207 tries for the Rabbitohs to sit just five behind Irvine’s premiership record of 212 that has stood since 1973.
“Alex is the greatest tryscorer our club has seen and is on track to become the greatest tryscorer in the sport’s history in this country,” said Rabbitohs head of recruitment and retention Mark Ellison.
“He is a smart footballer that knows how to finish off a tryscoring movement and how to use his body to put himself in the best position to get over the line.
“He is a South Sydney junior from the La Perouse Panthers club, he is an inspiration to so many young footballers from our district, across the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community as well as the people of Papua New
Guinea.”
The Wests Tigers have also moved to lock down a senior member of their squad, with Api Koroisau signing a new two-year extension with the club.
The hooker will now remain at the Tigers until at least the end of the 2028 season and is looking to lead the side back up the NRL ladder.
“Api is a great player but more so he is the heart and soul of this team,” coach Benji Marshall said.
“His leadership, experience and energy are invaluable. Having him commit to our future is massive for the direction we are heading in.
“We are thrilled to have him and his wonderful family here long term.”
Meanwhile, Parramatta have released Ryan Matterson from the remainder of his contract for the 2025 season to take up a deal with Warrington in the Super League. The veteran remains contracted to the club for 2026.
Meanwhile, Knights superstar Kalyn Ponga has put an end to speculation about his future by announcing that he would remain at Newcastle until at least the end of his current contract.
Ponga, who missed last week’s Origin decider with a season-ending Lisfranc injury, is contracted to the Knights until the end of the 2027 season.
The Newcastle captain is set to lead the Knights in next year’s season opener against the Cowboys at Allegiant Stadium.
The star fullback took to social media on Thursday to declare that he had not intention of leaving the club in the next two years.
“Committed to the end of 2027. Excited about the vision of the club. Appreciate those that support me!” Ponga posted on Instagram.
The Knights also posted a photo of Ponga with his statement.
Meanwhile, Raiders forward Zac Hosking has re-signed with the club until the end of the 2028 season.
Already under contract until the end of 2026, the two-year extension keeps Hosking in Canberra for a further three seasons.
Raiders Coach Ricky Stuart said the re-signing of Hosking was a great example of a player coming to Canberra for an opportunity and being able to build into some career-best form.
“Zac came to the club looking for a chance to be a regular NRL player, and he’s shown us that’s exactly what he is,” Stuart said. “He’s a hardworking and skilful player who can cover a number of positions for us, and we’re really happy to have him as part of the squad for the next three years.”
PNG international Jack de Belin will join the Eels for the 2026 season, with an option in the club’s favour for the 2027 season.
Parramatta coach Jason Ryles said de Belin would be a valuable addition to the team, bringing experience to a young roster.
The Dragons had previously announced the de Belin was departing at the end of the season
The 34-year-old former NSW Origin forward has played 244 NRL matches for St George Illawarra since debuting as a 20-year-old in 2011.
He has also played six Tests for Papua New Guinea, where his grandmother was born, playing a pivotal role in their victory in last year’s inaugural Pacific Bowl final.
The Dragons said in a statement that De Belin had recently been informed that they would not offer him a contract extension beyond this season and as a result he would be taking up an opportunity at another club from 2026.
The Knights have signed Peter Hola on a two-year deal for the 2026-27 seasons.
Hola made his NRL debut with the Cowboys in 2019 before moving to Canberra for two seasons and is now with the Dolphins.
“Peter has been in fantastic form for Norths in Queensland Cup,” said Knights Head of Recruitment Peter O’Sullivan.
“He has been the standout forward in that competition and he deserves his selection in the NRL this week.
“Standing at 193cms and tipping the scales at 110kg, Peter is exactly what we are looking for in our forward pack.
“Having been a promising player from a very early age, he is now ready to take the next steps in the NRL.”
Bulldogs hooker Reed Mahoney will join halfback Toby Sexton in departing the club at the end of the season after signing a three-year contract with North Queensland.
Sexton will move to France next season to join Catalans Dragons on a two-year Super League contract.
Mahoney, 27, is a former Canterbury co-captain who has made 64 appearances for the club so far and featured in every game since shifting from Parramatta, where he played 101 NRL matches.
At Belmore, Mahoney has been a leading contributor to Canterbury’s charge to a drought-breaking finals campaign in 2024 and a top two spot through 17 rounds this season.
“Reed has been wonderful for the Bulldogs. He came to us in a time of real struggles for our club and has been a leading light in our journey to improve as a football team,” General Manager of Football Phil Gould said.
“I personally owe Reed a great debt of gratitude for his decision to join us when he did, and for his wholehearted performances, each and every week.
“This was a great opportunity for Reed to secure his longer-term future and we totally support his decision.”
Mahoney has regularly been part of the Maroons extended squads in recent seasons and has appeared for the Prime Minister’s XIII.
“Hooker is a critical position on the rugby league field, they touch the ball more than any other player, set the tone of your attack and are a key member of your defensive intent, which is why we are thrilled to be able to secure Reed on a long-term deal,” Cowboys General Manager of Football Micheal Luck said.
“His service is as good as any dummy-half in the NRL, he has craft in his game through a good sleight of hand, he’s a threat close to the line and has one of the better kicking games of the hookers in our competition.”
Meanwhile, Sexton is the first signing by newly appointed Catalans coach Joel Tompkins, who has replaced former Roosters and Warriors assistant Steve McNamara.
The former Titans halfback, who joined Canterbury in 2023, has played every game for the Bulldogs this season as the club has moved near the top of the NRL ladder.
Sexton said: “I’m super pumped to be joining the Catalans Dragons for the following season and can’t wait for what’s ahead”.
Hooker Tallyn Da Silva has joined the Eels until the end of the 2029 season.
Da Silva grew up in Campbelltown and played in the West Tigers pathways teams before making his NRL debut with the club in 2023.
“Tallyn is a very talented hooker with great skills and a strong running game which complements our squad nicely,” Parramatta Eels General Manager of Football Mark O’Neill said.
The Eels have also extended the contract of promising outside back Jordan Samrani and upgraded hooker Ryley Smith.
The Raiders have continued their push to retain their squad for the future, with winger Savelio Tamale re-signing until the end of the 2028 season.
Tamale was already contracted to the Green Machine for next year but an impressive start to his time in Canberra has seen him rewarded with a contract extension.
Wests Tigers have announced that Tristan Hope and Charlie Murray have both extended their stays with Wests Tigers into the 2026 season.
Hope, on a Development deal this year, will move into the top 30, while Murray will progress to a Development contract in 2026.
Hope and Murray joined the club having had extensive experience in Queensland’s Hostplus Cup competition, winning a grand final together with Brisbane Tigers in 2023.
Queensland Origin and Test player Selwyn Cobbo will add even more firepower to the Dolphins’ backline after agreeing to a one-year deal for NRL season 2026.
Cobbo has agreed to terms on the contract that allows him to stay in Brisbane and will complement the Dolphins’ already potent backline under head coach Kristian Woolf.
The move is a good fit for Cobbo, who hails from Cherbourg just a couple of hours from the Dolphins’ base north of Brisbane.
Cobbo can play anywhere in the outside backs, and his Origin pedigree will only strengthen a Dolphins’ back five that includes players of the calibre of English international Herbie Farnworth, Kangaroo Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, Kiwi Test player Jamayne Isaako, Jake Averillo and Jack Bostock.
“The Dolphins have always said we are about continuing to build a roster that will make us one of the top teams in the NRL,” Dolphins CEO Terry Reader said in a statement.
“Selwyn is an accomplished player who has done some amazing things at both Origin and NRL level already.
“But we believe he has untapped potential to go to even greater heights in our game and are excited about what he can do in a Dolphins jersey.”
