Coco Gauff is set to play her first match since Wimbledon in the opening round of the Canadian Open, where she will take on Danielle Collins.

Gauff crashed out in the first round at the All England Club, suffering a straight-sets defeat to Dayana Yastremska, recording her joint-worst finish ever in SW19.

Following a disappointing grass season, she is back in North America for the hard-court swing, where she’ll look to add more titles to her name.

The two-time Grand Slam champion chose not to play at the Washington Open, where one of Gauff‘s US compatriots has continued to shine on the WTA doubles tour.

Taylor Townsend clinched yet another title in D.C., partnered with Zhang Shuai, and became the world number one in doubles.

In her pre-tournament press conference, Gauff said of Townsend: “It’s super cool [for Taylor to get number one ranking]. I have known Taylor for a long, long time and I always root to her.

“I was really happy. I have always considered her one of the best doubles players, right there with Siniakova as the best on tour, so it is great to see that ranking match where I think a lot of players see her as.

“She deserves it all. I played with her and I don’t think I helped that much because I think we lost in the quarters and I didn’t play that well with her.

“But I think she is hopefully going to stay there for a long time, and her and Katarina are a great team together. I am really proud of her.”

Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova’s Grand Slam results

Up until last season, Townsend had made two Grand Slam finals in doubles, finishing as the runner-up with Caty McNally at the US Open in 2022, and with Leylah Fernandez at Roland Garros in 2023.

In 2024, however, she teamed up with Katerina Siniakova and secured a maiden major title at Wimbledon with the Czech star.

After bowing out in the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows that year, the two won the Australian Open together in 2025.

They have since made the quarter-finals at Roland Garros and reached the final four at Wimbledon earlier this summer.
