Westpac is among a group of Australian companies being urged by the Albanese government to consider sponsoring Papua New Guinea’s new NRL team, as politicians seek to shore up bilateral ties and curb China’s influence in the region.
The PNG Chiefs are expected to join the NRL competition from 2028 as part of a $600 million deal with the federal government signed late last year. The club is without a chief executive, players or a venue, but the government is taking early steps to ensure it has viable, trusted partners.
