Jones said he, like his fellow regional coaches, knew the situation was coming, but it does not make it any less difficult.

“We’re utilising everybody on the factory floor, there’s no doubt about that,” he said.

“The players have been great, the challenge is just the depth, trying to create meaningful opposition when you’ve got injuries and bumps, trying to keep 15 against 15.”

But Jones insists their depletion gives other players opportunities, including those from the academy, as Ospreys seeks to rise from 14th in the URC table.

“It’s a real test of our depth and our environment in how we get the most out of these boys over the next few weeks,” he said.

“We know what we need to do in this game [against Edinburgh], we’re going to a really tough place in the Hive. They’ve got a very good forward pack and set-piece, it’s right up there with the top teams in the league and they’ve got a really effective kicking game.

“We’ve given Edinburgh the respect they deserve but our focus is on ourselves with all the changes, we’ve got to deliver on our game and be the best we can be.”
